Anyone here using pfSense for a home firewal/router?

Unread post by Vinster »

I've been using one for about 6 months now. Used an old FM2 A8-6500 with 8GB or DDR3. It's been doing overall great when the house isn't getting bombed from the internet.

My sons minecraft server has been getting our IP attacked.. been DDos'd 3-4 times and port scanned like a MoFo.. The system is perfectly fine as long as we're not being attacked... my ISPs a joke, keeps telling me that our IP is dynamic but I and they can't get it to roll-over.. it's a bloody pain.

When we are being attacked, the CPU usage spikes to 100% and I can't even open logs...

So I'll be taking down a testing system I have with an i5-7400 and 8GB of DDR4.. I hope that setup helps us out a bit more.

I've ordered another i350-T4... I have one in the other rig. I figure I'll setup the new and leave the old as a cold backup. I'll just have to remember to do updates to that system.

Only add-on package I have installed is pfBlockerNG, that's been blocking a load of traffic.

before pfBlocker my logs were about 25-30MB, now my typical logs size is about 75MB/day... When getting scanned or DDoSs my logs get up to 4.5GB.. kind of nuts thinking about it... it's a text file...

anyway, was wondering what you guys are running?

Started the build today. got the i350-T4 ethernet card, put things in an slim old mATX case I have. Ordered an 80mm Noctua fan the replace the one at the top of the case and am getting two Noctua 40mm fans for the bottom to coll the NIC, theses can get toasty if there isn't any or little airflow.

using
- Asus Prime B250M-C
- Intel I5-7400
- 8GB of Corsair Memory.
- PSU in the case is a 350 or 450W PSU, nothing at all fancy.

Thought about changing the fan in the PSU as well.. or figure out how to get a SFF PSU in there as this PSU is custom to the case, wouldn't be easily replaced.

The horder that I am, I found the feet that go with this case.
